Lindt can trace its history back to 1845, when David Sprüngli and his son, Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, produced the first solid chocolate bar in Zurich’s old town. It was an instant hit, and their first chocolate factory opened two years later.

In 1879, Rodolphe Lindt pioneered the method of extended conching in his chocolate shop in Berne, thanks to a bout of forgetfulness. This resulted in a silky smooth texture.

Two years later, Sprüngli acquired Lindt, including its brand and secret recipe, and so the Lindt & Sprüngli company was formed. The company grew rapidly, with many creations becoming staples of shopping baskets today. For example, in 1949, the Lindor brand was unveiled (the truffles followed in 1969), and the Excellence chocolate bar range began in 1989. That iconic golden bunny was first conceived in 1952, followed by the golden bear in 2011.

In 2020, Lindt opened its visitor attraction, Home of Chocolate, in Kilchberg, Switzerland, next to the company headquarters.
